The Lord is My Light

Scripture:
John 1:4-8 “In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it. 6There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7This man came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all through him might believe. 8He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.”

Introduction:
Light is that which brings visibility to things that would otherwise be darkened or invisible. Jesus Christ is the very light of God that brings revelation to us. When we receive Him as our Lord and savior things that had been hidden begin to be revealed to us. The very light of God brings the invisible world into the visible as the spirit of revelation leads us step by step.

I. The Light is good.
Genesis 1:1-5 “1In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. 3Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. 4And God saw the light, that it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness. 5God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. So the evening and the morning were the first day.”
A. Light reveals any disorder that may be present.
B. The chaos that exists in a life is revealed when the light comes.
C. The Light begins to bring order and balance to that which was hidden by the darkness.
D. Darkness cannot overcome light but must give way to the power of the light.
E. The first thing that must happen in a redeemed life is the separation of light and dark.
Ephesians 5:8-10 “8For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light 9(for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth), 10finding out what is acceptable to the Lord.”
F. God sees what the light has accomplished and calls it good.

II. When darkness covers the land, God’s people will have light to guide and protect them.
Exodus 10:21-23 “Then the LORD said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand toward heaven, that there may be darkness over the land of Egypt, darkness which may even be felt.” 22So Moses stretched out his hand toward heaven, and there was thick darkness in all the land of Egypt three days. 23They did not see one another; nor did anyone rise from his place for three days. But all the children of Israel had light in their dwellings.”
A. The darkness is a result of ignoring the presence of God.
B. Without light people don’t know what is right or wrong.
C. When the darkness covers the land, the people of God will be made manifest.
Matthew 5:14-16 “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. 16Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”

III. God’s light is a means of direction.
Exodus 13:20-22 “So they took their journey from Succoth and camped in Etham at the edge of the wilderness. 21And the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of cloud to lead the way, and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so as to go by day and night. 22He did not take away the pillar of cloud by day or the pillar of fire by night from before the people.”
A. God has a way of bringing light to His people no matter what the circumstances are.
B. God’s light is available in the dark days of life’s struggle.
C. God never leaves His people; he is always there in good times or bad.
Hebrews 13:5-6 “Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” 6So we may boldly say: “The LORD is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?”

IV. The Lord is my light.
Psalm 27:1-4 “The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? 2 When the wicked came against me to eat up my flesh, my enemies and foes, they stumbled and fell. 3 Though an army may encamp against me, my heart shall not fear; though war may rise against me, in this I will be confident. 4 One thing I have desired of the LORD, That will I seek: That I may dwell in the house of the LORD All the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, And to inquire in His temple.”
A. Although trouble, temptation or tribulation may come my way, The Lord of Light is with me to bring order to my life.
B. The Lord of Light will bring understanding to me. This is revelation.
Ephesians 5:8-10 “For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light 9(for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth), 10finding out what is acceptable to the Lord.”
C. To dwell in the house of the Lord indicates that we will have companionship.
I John 1:6-7 “If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. 7But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.”
D. The Lord will bring comfort during our times of struggle.
Psalm 23:4 “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.”
I Corinthians 1:3-4 “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, 4who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.”
