The Commission
Written by Pastor Leon
The Commission Introduction:                One of the dictionary definitions of the word commission is the act of granting authority to undertake certain functions. Wikipedia also says Commissioned officers derive authority directly from a sovereign power and, as such, hold a commission charging them with the duties and responsibilities of a specific office or position. This is the way I view this word in my message today.                God’s people have been commissioned by God to carry out his plans and projects and He has given them all the authority necessary to fulfill the task. I.                    In this commissioning we are told to:A.                  GoMark 16:15 And He said to them“Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.”B.                  TestifyPeter preaches at the house of Cornelius.Acts 10:42-46 And He commanded us to preach to the people, and to testify that it is He who was ordained by God to be Judge of the living and the dead. 43To Him all the prophets witness that, through His name, whoever believes in Him will receive remission of sins.” 44While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who heard the word. 45And those of the circumcision who believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also. 46For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God.”C.                  Use the power given to us.Acts 1:8 But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” II.                  As we fulfill our commission we are:A.                  To tell others that the kingdom of God is at hand.Matthew 10:5-8 These twelve Jesus sent out and commanded them, saying: “Do not go into the way of the Gentiles, and do not enter a city of the Samaritans. 6But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. 7And as you go, preach, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’ 8Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers,  raise the dead, cast out demons. Freely you have received, freely give.”B.                  To know that we have authority to speak for our government, the kingdom of God.After the arrest of Peter and John for the healing of the lame man at the temple gate.Acts 4:33 And with great power the apostles gave witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And great grace was upon them all.”C.                  To know that God is mightier than physical forces.1.                   The commission given.Haggai 1:14 (KJV) "And The Lord stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people; and they came and did work in the house of The Lord of hosts, their God"2.                   The word of the Lord through Zechariah to Zerubbable.Zechariah 4:6 So he answered and said to me: “This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: ‘Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,’ Says the Lord of hosts.”D.                  Not to be afraid or dismayed for God is with us.Isaiah 41:10 Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.’E.                   To be impartial.Moses speaks to the people before his death.Deuteronomy 10:17-19 For the Lord your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome, who shows no partiality nor takes a bribe. 18He administers justice for the fatherless and the widow, and loves the stranger, giving him food and clothing. 19Therefore love the stranger, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt”F.                   To be unselfish.Matthew 22:35-39 Then one of them, a lawyer, asked Him a question, testing Him, and saying, 36“Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?” 37Jesus said to him, ‘you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’£ 38This is the first and great commandment. 39And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’£ 40On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.”G.                  To be sincere.Romans 12:9-13 Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil. Cling to what is good. 10Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another; 11not lagging in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord; 12rejoicing in hope, patient in tribulation, continuing steadfastly in prayer; 13distributing to the needs of the saints, given to hospitality.” III.               Those we are commissioned to minister to will know we are Christians by our love.John 13:34-35 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. 35By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” IV.                As we are commissioned to go forth, we go in the love of Christ.John 15:9-12 “As the Father loved Me, I also have loved you; abide in My love. 10If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love. 11“These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be full. 12This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 13Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.”
